Had it done so more widely and systematically, the government would have found it much harder to suppress.
The Cultural Revolution of 1966–68 was critical in three main ways for the evolution of political dissent. It plunged China into a terror that traumatized all social classes, not least the political elite—parts of which began to question their commitment to the methods of dictatorship. It gravely weakened the Party’s institutional base and threw open to lasting question the legitimacy of its rule. And it spawned the Red Guards, who swept China for a time and got an appetizing taste for political independence.
